The first and most important step of starting to swim or get back in the water after a long break is to just do it. I know that it can be intimidating or it can feel easy to brush off going to work out and swim for however long you would like to or half the time too. But swimming is one of the best ways to exercise in a low impact manner. It is also really good for just clearing your mind and focusing on your technique because it is so technique heavy. There is less to think about in terms of your daily life and maybe the issues or drama that concern you. Swimming can be a home for many people and I think that’s why so many people like it. It is a great way to get in shape while also enjoying exercising.
There is a group of people who come back to swimming after a break, whether that be a couple of months, a couple of years or a couple of decades. These people may have swam growing up, in high school or maybe even in college. Sometimes, when your life is so dedicated to the sport, you get burnt out. This creates zero desire to be in the pool and swim and so the break that you’ve taken has been long enough and maybe you feel like you’re ready to get back in the water. This is where just deciding to go and putting your swimsuit, cap and goggles on and just jumping in and going for however long feels comfortable is going to be the best thing that you can do.
There is another group of people who have likely never swam in an exercising manner other than just going to the pool to have fun. This other group of people have decided that it is going to be a good way to get exercise and have fun. Maybe they’ve signed up for a triathlon and know that swimming is their weakest discipline. This other group of people, whoever you are out there, you’re going to find that you love swimming. It can be really frustrating at first because the technique may be really difficult for you to master. In order to really gain speed and momentum, you have to kick and pull your arms properly. Once you figure it out, your life is going to be so much easier and you’re going to look forward to every single swim session in the pool.
Swimming is a really enjoyable way to get energy out and feel refreshed while also exercising and I think you already know this. You know that swimming is really cool and you really wanna learn and you know it’s gonna work wonders for you and whatever your goals are the very first step that you have to take is obviously getting a swimsuit that’s comfortable and able you’re able to swim in and move in without it being uncomfortable or feeling like it’s going to fall off or it’s not in the right places. You also need a cap and goggles, I would really recommend a cap. I know that a lot of people swim without one, however it’s going to protect your ears and help less water get in them. It’s just inevitable that there will be water inside your ears at a given point and I have some really great drying eardrops that I can recommend to you. I think it’s called like dry faster dry aid I can I can link it here and you can grab it on Amazon, it’s less than $10.
After you’ve gotten your swimsuit in cap and goggles, literally all you have to do is find a pool in your area and go swim. Don’t feel like you need to be perfect. I know you have some sort of idea of how to swim and that’s exactly what I want you to do is just go jump in the pool and see what you can do and see what comes natural and what doesn’t. I can link a couple of beginner swim YouTube videos that are going to be really helpful for you to watch if you’re getting frustrated with technique and also just so you can better learn technique because that is going to help you to get faster and it’s just gonna make swimming a whole lot easier for you.
Now that you are hyped and ready to go, I want you to go swim. After you swim and you’ve watched the beginner YouTube videos for technique I would’ve loved to hear from you about how it went and how you enjoyed it and how you hated it or it was really difficult for you. It’s all important to me and I would love to hear all about!
